Hi there all.........
I've gotten to know that there are quite a few people out there that is interested to learn Bahasa Melayu (Bahasa or BM for short)especially when trying to have a conversation with native speakers.
Bahasa Melayu is quite easy in terms of trying to learn; trying to master it is a different matter altogether .....
When I studied English way back then, there was one class that I found really interesting. It was my linguistic Class where we were taught to pronounce correctly by reading the phonetic symbols in the dictionary .
In the few websites that are teaching Bahasa, I found that they did not emphasise the popular way of pronouncing the words for Malaysians. Though the rule of thumb in pronouncing a Malay word is "What You See is What You Pronounce", there are exceptions especially in pronouncing the ending of a particular word. This is where how people could tell the difference between Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu. For example for the word "saya" (meaning" I") in BM we pronounce it as "sa:yÉ™" instead of "sa:ya:" for Bahasa Indonesia.
I am including here a phonetic symbols chart used in english dictionaries that I had gotten from inmaculadaschoolchatroom.blogspot.com
